MINIMUM WAGE : NUJ FCT Directs Members To Join Protest

Squeal to the directive of the Nigeria Labour Congress for a nation-wide mass protest over the issue of minimum wage, NUJ FCT Council in a statement signed by the Secretary of Council, Ochiaka Ugwu has directed its members especially in government-owned media organisations to actively take part in the mass protest.

The mass protest is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, January 8, 2019.

The statement read
"No doubt that this will affect our activities in the short term, but the long term benefits are overwhelmingly more significant, both for yourselves and for us.

Make no mistake about it, our pay and conditions are ethical questions of fair compensation for our vital work and we also know that our activities dont benefit when staff are undervalued and overworked.

It is particularly concerning that among the hardest hit are colleagues journalists who toil day and night and risk a lot in discharging their duties.

The demands are right and reasonable, and we all know the employers (Government at all level) can afford to meet them. The more effective we can all make Tuesday’s action, the sooner the disruption can end. Previous experience has shown that victories are possible when we are united and resolute.

It’s for these reasons that Council has repeatedly and overwhelmingly in favour of the fair pay campaign and supports the industrial action. We are encouraging our members not to undermine the strike. We hope to see you participate actively.

Please note that in the event of any new development, you will be communicated immediately".
