RETHINKING OUR DEVELOPMENT PRIORITY AND STRATEGY IN THE NORTH-CENTRAL NIGERIA By Dr. Aliyu Ilias.

Despite a teeming population and resource-laden, land space of 242,424 square kilometres, our so-called North central that comprises six states and the Nigeria federal capital, we have taken only baby steps in our developmental trajectory.

Those seemingly better state marshalled themselves to high standing. It is obvious even to the casual observer that northern central is not living up to its existential potentials.

The North-central youth must realize that there is no easy path to progress for Nigeria.
Far-reaching decisions would need to be brokered and very radical steps taken. Anything short of this will leave us in this never ending state of quasi-development for the youth.
Our leaders in the north-central keep giving us hope for the future and to trust God, yes our people love to leave it all in the hands of God.

Hope is good for consolation, but it is not a strategy; prayers are good for inspiration, but insufficient if we do nothing. We will not accidentally become a revered region. Actions must be taken, plans must be made and executed, and work must be done!

We have gotten two Senate president recently what has the region benefited, I just imagine if their tenure has secure a cargo Airport for north-central Nigeria,

INSECURITY
The entire north-central include federal capital territory is being subjected to fear, threat, danger, molestation, intimidation, harassment etc in all aspect and the youth are majorly affected because we are like tools in the hand of most of the people that mastermind the problem which is mostly political and ethno-religious challenge, causes of insecurity in the north-central Nigeria can be traced to

ETHNO-RELIGIOUS CRISES
Insecurity in the form of ethnic, communal, and religious crisis is one of the biggest, most complexes, and perhaps the most complicated problem facing the north-central Nigeria.

The north-central youth should be made to understand that at the end of every crisis, it is the people and the geopolitical zone that loses
State Government should address the problem of youth unemployment, through empowerment programmes and creation of the job. In addition, the government should create an enabling environment that would encourage private investors to invest in the region.

AGRICULTURE
We canvass seriously to have a Cargo airport in north-central Nigeria, since our strength is in agriculture, the youth wouldn’t want to embark on a subsistence farming, but if we are sure of the ready market both international and local the youth would certainly do more in Agriculture. Most of the farming produce are rotten due to lack of immediate market. This are part of what we want senate president, Minister of Agriculture and other representatives of the north central to look into as matters of urgency
We need to tame this challenge of herders, As herders are under greater pressure to find water, pasture and veterinary treatment for their animals they are constantly trying to find ways to enter new zones perhaps claim ownership. The Demographic increase has made these North central zones problematic as herders are now competing with farmers for the same space. This desperate herders resort to increasingly desperate measures. With religious colouration.

At the same time, potential religious conflict is being stoked up by politicians for dubious ends. Pastoralists are by and large Muslims, whereas many of the people they move among are Christians or traditionalists

INFRASTRUCTURE
Due to the proximity of the federal capital to our states in the north-central we are to benefit from the infrastructural development such as road, railway services, electricity and water supply, this can be done through our representative in the National Assembly, I am sure some of us sitting here we soon assume those positions we need to take advantage of this proximity to annex more development for the region.

Benue is the food basket of the nation if such agrarian state can have its own federal government built cargo airport, it will certainly create more than one million employment because of the multiplier effect
Kogi and Kwara, Ajokuta remain our hope for the region, we need to put pressure on government more to achieve proper overhauling of the iron steel company.

The dredging of river Niger that was stop should be vigorously canvassed for at the legislative level by our representatives
Nasarawa state house a lot of solid minerals, how has this create employment or benefit the immediate community and the region
Niger state with power need to benefit from it and we need to also look at community social responsibilities that all these resources attract. It is crystal clear that other religions with natural resources are benefiting from Community social responsibility of companies through free education and infrastructural development,

The Tourism attraction of the Plateau state needs to be resuscitated through immediate control of the ethno-religious crises that has been persistence for well over twenty-five years.

When our phones or laptops begin to malfunction, the manufacturers often suggest a hard reset when all else fails. North-central is in urgent need of a hard reset. Many commentators have tagged North-central as the tool under the north and failed or failing Zone but I hold on to the belief that all hope is not lost, the youth are the solution lets brace up to the challenge
